Race Analysis

Start Analysis

Read starting line bias, distance to line at the gun, time to line (TTL), and early progress (DMG30) together.

1. Verify Start Line Geometry & Signal Times

Before reading start metrics, verify that the start line endpoints (RC signal boat and Pin mark) match field placements and that the warning and gun signals match the race committee log. A wrong line angle completely distorts line bias and distance calculations.

2. Read the Four Core Start Metrics Together

  1. 01
    1. Line Bias Angle: indicates whether the Pin end or RC end gives a tactical distance advantage toward the wind.
  2. 02
    2. Distance to Line at Gun: signed distance in metres. Negative = behind line; Positive = over line (OCS course side).
  3. 03
    3. Time to Line (TTL): seconds from gun until bow crosses the line. Ideal is 0–3 seconds with maximum boat speed.
  4. 04
    4. DMG30 / VMG30: distance made good toward mark 1 in the first 30 seconds. Reveals clean air acceleration away from the fleet.

3. Avoid Single-Number Verdicts

A small distance to the line at the gun does not guarantee a strong start if the boat is pinned under dirty air with zero speed. Always read TTL, speed at crossing, and DMG30 together. An on-course-side (OCS) GPS position is evidence for review, not an automatic protest ruling.
