Race Analysis

Analysis Overview

Dissect start timing, VMG distributions, course-side lane choices, and tack/gybe Loss metrics with interactive charts and maps.

1. Open Report & Set Baseline Scope

Open Analysis from the session card in the event portal or viewer. Before reading numbers, verify the data scope:

  1. 01
Actual start signal: verify the warning and start gun timestamps match the official race committee log.
  2. 02
Wind source priority: the report prioritizes Observed wind from weather stations, then Manual wind entered by the PRO, then Inferred wind calculated from fleet tacking patterns.
  3. 03
Boat selection drawer: use the drawer to select or search boats to compare. Selections persist seamlessly across all tabs.

2. Race Overview & Finishing Gaps

The Race Overview tab provides an interactive summary table of all participating boats based on GPS track points:

  1. 01
Elapsed time & finish gap: inspect each boat's total elapsed duration from start to finish line, and the arrival gap behind the gun or winner.
  2. 02
Track-derived estimates: note that overview rankings are track estimates designed for tactical analysis, not formal jury-approved Results.

3. Sailing Performance & VMG Distributions

Analyze boat speed efficiency after the start gun across wind angles and polar targets:

  1. 01
Upwind & downwind VMG distributions: compares the percentage of time each boat maintained high Velocity Made Good (VMG) along the wind axis.
  2. 02
Best continuous speed intervals: highlights peak sustained 10s / 30s / 60s speed runs rather than unrepeatable GPS noise spikes.

4. Start Analysis (Line Bias, TTL & DMG30)

The Start view reconstructs the starting line geometry and fleet positioning at the starting signal:

  1. 01
Line bias angle: measures whether the Pin end or Committee vessel (RC) end is favored relative to the true wind direction.
  2. 02
Distance to line at gun: signed distance perpendicular to the line (negative = behind the line, positive = OCS course side).
  3. 03
Time to line (TTL): seconds elapsed between the start gun and the boat's bow crossing the line vector.
  4. 04
DMG30 / VMG30: Distance Made Good toward mark 1 within the first 30 seconds after the gun. Negative progress is clipped to zero.

5. Leg Performance & Left/Middle/Right Choices

Dissect each leg individually to separate raw boat speed from tactical extra distance:

  1. 01
Sailed distance vs. direct distance: extra distance sailed beyond the direct mark-to-mark line and extra distance percentage.
  2. 02
Leg time gap: elapsed duration difference on that specific leg against the fastest boat, separate from mark arrival timestamps.
  3. 03
Left / Middle / Right lane split: on Leg 1, boats are categorized into Left, Middle, and Right lanes based on their course-side distribution. The favored side is highlighted only if its average mark 1 arrival rank is >3 places higher.

6. Maneuver & Rounding Analysis (Signed Loss Ruler)

Open the Maneuvers tab to inspect individual tacks, gybes and buoy roundings in scientific detail:

  1. 01
Full-track locator & wind-up detail map: locating the turn on the overall course, then viewing it in the detail map oriented with wind pointing straight up.
  2. 02
Speed & bisector VMG overlay: charts entry speed, minimum apex speed, exit speed, and speed recovery time (seconds from minimum to 85% of entry speed).
  3. 03
Signed Loss ruler: Loss = expected progress along the turn bisector based on straight-sailing baseline minus actual net progress. Negative Loss means gain against the baseline; positive Loss means progress lost.
  4. 04
Mark roundings: mark roundings are grouped by course step and physical mark, separated from open-water tacks.

7. Exporting Evidence & Conducting Debriefs

Click "Export CSV" to download the summary table for selected boats, or use "Save PDF" to generate printable debrief sheets through the browser print dialog. Always record session name, boat selection, wind reference source, and replay interval alongside training takeaways.
